Musical Theatre Writing Workshop with Stephen Flaherty

18 June 2024, 10am - 11:30am

On Tuesday 18th June, award-winning composer Stephen Flaherty will be Zooming in from New York to join a select few musical theatre writers at the Alex Theatre St Kilda to focus on the craft of dramatic songwriting for theatre.

The event itself will last for 90 minutes. The presenters will have 15 minutes each, and must share an “Elevator Pitch” about their show before setting up their song. A Q&A will take place after the presentations.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Stephen Flaherty is a composer for theatre, film, and the concert hall. With longtime collaborator lyricist-librettist Lynn Ahrens, he won Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for the Broadway musical Ragtime and was nominated for two Academy Awards and two Golden Globes for the animated feature film Anastasia, which they also adapted for Broadway.

Additional Broadway composing credits include Once On This Island (Tony Award, Best Revival), Seussical, Rocky, My Favorite Year, Chita Rivera: The Dancer’s Life (original songs) and Neil Simon’s Proposals (incidental music.) Off-Broadway and regional credits include A Man Of No Importance, The Glorious Ones and Dessa Rose (all three produced by Lincoln Center Theatre); Little Dancer (Kennedy Center and Seattle’s Fifth Avenue Theatre), Knoxville (Asolo Repertory Theatre), Lucky Stiff (Playwrights Horizons), In Your Arms (Old Globe) and Loving Repeating: A Musical Of Gertrude Stein (About Face).

He has seen his stage work produced in theatres across the US and internationally, most recently in London, Tokyo, and Mexico City. Film includes Anastasia, Lucky Stiff, After The Storm and Nasrin. Once On This Island is currently being developed as a live action musical film by Disney. Additional awards include London’s Olivier Award (Best Musical), Chicago’s Jefferson Award (Best Musical) and four Grammy nominations, both as writer and producer. He serves on Council for the Dramatists Guild of America and co-founded the DGF Fellows Program for Emerging Writers with Lynn Ahrens.
